Ylang-Ylang flowers, with a sweet fragrance, deliver heady essential oil as soon as they are cultivated. There are 3 essential oils of Ylang-ylang: extra (distillation of the first 2 hours), first (fraction obtained 1 hour after the extra) and complete (total distillation). The extra is mainly used in perfumery. Filipinos mixed the flowers with coconut oil and turmeric to obtain the "boori-boori", an anti-infectious balm that also protects the skin and hair.

Dans les Comores, en Afrique australe, elle était traditionnellement utilisée comme antiseptique intestinal et pour lutter contre la malaria. Aux Philippines, les fleurs mélangées à de l’huile de coco éloignaient fièvre et infections. L’huile essentielle d’ylang-ylang première est obtenue une heure après l’extra.
