The Lauraceae family is named after this plant, which is also known as sweet bay. There’s a laurel tree in Vienne, in western France, that is estimated to be 1500 years old, but the trees generally only live for around 50 years. Young Greek doctors collected the berries, or bacca laurea. Its medicinal properties were renowned in the ancient world. It has an exhilarating green, fresh, camphoric aroma.
