Black spruce, or picea mariana, is a conifer common in the northeast of the USA and widespread across Canada. The designation ‘black’ is in reference to the color of the trunk. The tree was highly prized by the Indigenous peoples of North America. In Quebec, the resin was thought to have powerful properties. The needles were used for decoction.
