It belongs to the Myrtaceae family, such as the cajeput and the niaouli. Sailors in Captain Cook's era used leaves as a tea substitute, hence the name tea tree. During World War II, the Australian authorities massively gave Tea Tree essential oil to the population to fight against infections. Australians traditionally prepare herbal teas from infusion of the leaves for their antibacterial properties.
